North Caicos is the ‘garden’ island of the Turks and Caicos because the slight increase in rainfall it receives enables it to be the most lush and fruitful island in the chain. North Caicos (affectionately called just “North”) is a fun island to explore – either as a day trip from Providenciales or on its own – because it is very distinct from Provo (it is much greener and has more hills) yet has many of the same attractions – beautiful beaches, friendly people and peaceful surroundings. North’s wonderful, pristine beaches rival those found in Provo - Horsestable Beach, Pelican Point, Whitby Beach, Three Mary Cays all offer expansive white stretches of sand, vibrant blue waters and total seclusion in natural beauty. Explore this vibrant and friendly island and learn about its history, plant life, and culture. North is home to one of the most successful cotton plantations of the Loyalist era. When it was operating, Wades Green Plantation was considered one of the top producers of sea island cotton and held a very prestigious reputation because Caicos cotton was believed to be the best in the world. Dry conditions, thin soil, pests, and tropical storms ended the production, but visitors can view the great house, the kitchen building and several other buildings. If buildings aren’t your thing, you can choose to visit the Flamingo Pond Nature Reserve in Bottle Creek instead. This reserve boasts one of the world’s largest flocks of pink flamingos. Another fascinating site is Cottage Pond, a 250ft sinkhole in the middle of the island. North Caicos can be excellent for bird-watching and is a great place to take off on an eco-adventure, especially if combined with Middle Caicos, which is now easily accessible by a causeway. In addition to the vibrant green landscapes and breathtaking natural attractions, North has a quiet, relaxed pace to it, further enhanced by the people who are genuinely friendly and welcoming. Many of the people from North practice bush medicine and still prefer to use herbal remedies instead of over-the-counter options. But, the vibrant green landscapes are only part of the attraction – the island’s residents are friendly and welcoming and its expansive, pristine beaches are the real lures.
