North CaicosFree Advice from our local experts!

  • Why go: Take some time out to explore, try some local food, meet some local islanders
  • What to pack:  binoculars, cash, towels and of course sunscreen!

We be bloggin' - Read our blog entry on taking a scenic 25 minute ferry ride over to Sandy Point Marina in North Caicos

Off we go exploring...

Start off from Provo on with a ferry ride to North Caicos and pick up your rental car at Sandy Point Marina. Head out on the paved road through the village of Sandy Point, a lovely twisty stretch of road. The first stop is Cottage Pond – if you reach the “T” intersection, you missed the pond. Lots of local lore about mermaids, bottomless depths and a beautiful shady spot.

At the Kew- Whitby road “T” intersection it’s time for a choice….left to Whitby and right to Kew.  Let’s go right and then right again onto the paved road. This brings you out on the new Bellefield landing highway…and right again to reach Wades Green plantation, Bellefield landing itself and the “Farm”. Each of these is worth a visit. Wades Green is a meandering old plantation ruin, pathways through the walls and the old entry road with the longest wall left in TCI! You can arrange a guided tour, pick up literature or take it on the fly. Bellefield Landing is at the end of the road…an enormous flat dustbowl ready and waiting for monster container ships to arrive. The “Farm” is across from Wades Green and as you drive in the goats will bleat greetings….find yourself with tomatoes, okra, eggplant, cabbage, papaya, basil, parsley, corn, peppers – hot and sweet….it is mouth watering produce,  fresh and fine.

Head into Kew itself then turn off to Whitby…

Several spots offer cold drinks, and if you love plants find Courtenay Missicks nursery at the east end of town.  Leaving Kew you will roll on past the T intersection and head into Whitby..a cluster of homes near the beach. If you want to swim, go left at the Whitby intersection “T” and wend your way through the little streets to find the sea for a dip. Silver Palm restaurant will welcome you for breakfast or lunch – reservations preferred.  Back along the main road now, and further into the heart of North Caicos, you will soon come to Sugies at Flamingo Pond - and she has binoculars if you forgot yours. The flocks of graceful pink birds are mesmerizing to watch. Surprising already how far you have driven and its only about half way through your day!

Shopping in North Caicos?  Oh ya!

Straight on toward  the Major Hill, and three small plazas await. First comes Miss B’s, with restaurant and a huge general dry good store, then a row of shops including salon, clothes and car rental, then on past . KDG convenience store, Aquatics Bar  into and the My Dee’s Plaza area with government offices, laundromat, My Dee’s restaurant, electrical store, hardware store, Liquors Plus liquor store, carQuest car shop, Dee Creek water plant. Then the North Caicos airport has fabulous bacon sandwiches and Titters nearby the best fried chicken ever.

Bottle Creek is the next stop...

Do drive around and around the little roads of the village or stop and walk. Bottle Creek is amazingly pretty with the East Bay Islands reserve just offshore, sandbars popping through the waves and lots of big trees. Buy homemade bread, share a beer by  Dar’s, pick up snacks at the shops, or sit and dangle your feet at the Trinity church pier…everyone is friendly and ready to chat.

If you want to explore the waters of North Caicos ...

Kayaks and bonefish flatboats are available – try Big Blue for Gibbs boats for excursions in his custom designed flatboats out to the offshore cays. It is a lovely way to spend a few quiet hours, exploring the cays, bonefishing, picnicing or just to watch the scenery.

North Caicos is very big, way bigger than you expect - and some of the activities can take a few hours.  To really explore Wades Green give yourself at least 90 minutes, two hours preferred. To enjoy a swim at Whitby, set aside 2 hours to find your spot, walk the beach and enjoy a refreshing swim. Stop for ½ hr at Flamingo Pond and really see how they move, feed, fly… Be sure to book 2-3 hours for boat excursions so you feel the water, the tide, the currents… This is not a day to race along, but a day to savor the rhythm of another island…the big one : North Caicos!

I had a wonderful experience with Susan. She was so helpful and guided me to make the right decision for my family's vacation. I so appreciated her helpful advice and her can do attitude. She was the reason I booked the vacation.
